The second edition of the NSE Corporate Challenge which took place in Lagos on Saturday, May 16, 2015, brought together hundreds of individuals, corporates and celebrities in a 5 kilometres walk, run or jog race through the busy business district of Lagos in the fight against cancer.

2015 NSE Corporate Challenge WinnerSpeaking during the event, the Executive Director, Market Operations and Technology, NSE, Mr. Ade Bajomo, said “The fun-filled walk, jog and run event organised in partnership with the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP), key publicly quoted companies and Dealing Members, is designed to create awareness about the need for early diagnosis of cancers, as most cancers can be treated if detected early”.

According to World Health Organization, one third of all cancers can be prevented, another one-third can be effectively cured with early diagnosis and palliative care can improve the quality of life of the last third.

“We are proud of the growth in this year’s edition of the NSE Corporate Challenge. This initiative is our flagship CSR event and it means a lot to us. Everyone knows someone who has been affected by this dreadful disease. Through this initiative, we want to provide access for early detection and treatment of cancers so that people can live to their full potentials. The funds raised will go toward the acquisition of Mobile Cancer Centres across Nigeria as we look to save lives”, said Mr. Bola Adeeko, Head of Corporate Services Division at The NSE.

The NSE Corporate Challenge is a professionally organised and volunteer-driven initiative involving over 400 companies listed on the Exchange, broker dealer firms and non-listed companies who identify with the initiative. “This year, we worked in close partnership with various sponsors, media partners and volunteers including Diamond Bank, Lafarge, Caverton, StanbicIBTC Bank, FCMB, First Bank, Guinness Nigeria, GSK, Cadbury, Channels Television, AIT, Nigeria Info FM, TVC, CNBC Africa, Proshare, and Chocolatecity Music Group. The contributions of these companies and individuals assisted in making the event a resounding success” Adeeko remarked.

More than 550 runners and walkers partook in the race which saw Esther Obiekwe of Diamond Bank Plc emerge as overall winner. Participants and fans used the hashtag #NSECorporateChallenge to put up posts on social media and #NSECorporateChallenge was the No. 1 trend on Twitter in Nigeria on Saturday morning.
Speaking of the sense of unity among runners, Adeeko said: “It’s amazing and emotional that everyone has come here today for the same reason. It doesn’t matter whether you are young or old, we are all running for the same cause.
The NSE Corporate Challenge is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of the Exchange, aimed at promoting the health & wellbeing of our operating community. “It was more than just seeing who finishes first. It is about the stories of why people were running and walking to support the second annual event”, noted Olumide Orojimi, Head Corporate Communications, NSE.
This edition of the NSE Corporate Challenge may have gone, but the fight against this dreaded disease continues. The NSE still welcomes contributions from corporate organisations who wants to identify with the cause and help to accelerate the vision of procuring cancer screening units to prevent avoidable deaths by making early detection possible for millions of people.
